Rainbow Mountain in Peru has recently become one of the most popular one-day hikes in the Cusco region. With more than 5000 meters (16000ft), Rainbow Mountain is truly an unforgettable experience where you will explore the rich colors of the Vinicunca region.

Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain, and the Coloured Mountain are some of the few names of this fantastic place, a relatively new tourist attraction in Cusco. Ausangate Trekking will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and drive for 3 hours to the trailhead, where your local chef will serve a picnic breakfast with amazing views of the Vilcanota Mountain range. After breakfast, start a 2-hour hike to the top of Rainbow Mountain. The walk is challenging due to the high altitude of Rainbow Mountain (5000m-16000ft).

ITINERARY

Rainbow Mountain Vinicunca Full Day

Day 1 : Guided Visit To The Vinicunca Mountain of Colors

Your day begins in Cusco, where you will be picked up from your hotel at 2:15 a.m. for a 3.5 hour drive to the trailhead. You will receive a local Peruvian-style breakfast prepared by our chef and energize you for the hike ahead.
The hike to the rainbow mountain will take about 2 hours and is a distance of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles). Along your journey you will pass through a vibrant green valley with the snow-capped peak of Apu Ausangate rising in the distance. You will see hundreds of roaming alpacas and have the opportunity to really see how the Quechua people live. As you approach Rainbow Mountain, you will begin to see the first signs of the colored minerals that formed the painted hills. Your guide will explain what constitutes the existence of Rainbow Mountain and how it was formed, and finally, with one last push, you will hike to a strategic point that will give you a 360-degree view of the beautiful landscape that makes up the sacred land.
We will have snacks on top and take a relaxing break to enjoy the views, where you can take in the beauty that surrounds you. At this time you can also enjoy a coca tea that the locals prepare for visitors. After about an hour, we will continue on to the red valley, another impressive area that hikers cannot miss, but is rarely visited. From here, we continue our hike back to the trailhead (1 hour). Shortly after, you will have a gourmet lunch prepared by our chef in a traditional mud house and depart back to Cusco, arriving around 4 pm.

* Horseback riding is available for hire the morning of the trek from local horsemen. Horses are not the property of Ausangate Trekking. If you choose to hire a horse, please note that the horsemen do not speak English nor do they always stay with the group of hikers and guide, as horses walk faster than hikers. If you decide to hire a horse, you assume full responsibility and are at your own risk. Ausangate Trekking is not responsible for any accidents that occur while riding a horse.
